Awful news from Boston; the explosions seem to have happened after the four-hour mark. A total of 108 Irish had registered to run and most came home in under four hours, so would have been on their way back to their hotels when the explosions happened. One who witnessed the explosion was Dubliner Gerry Carr, representing the Dublin Marathon, who finished in 4:07.38 and was catching his breath when the explosion happened 100m away from him.
Of that 108, eight didn’t start and 81 finished; a further 19 went through the half way but are not recorded as finishing. By 11.30pm, they were all accounted for.
Not that it really matters now: ex-Irish international Christine Kennedy finished second in the W55 class with a time of 2:55.01. First was the great Joan Samuelson,a former world record holder, in 2:50.29. First home of the Irish was Anthony Walsh in 2:36.40.
