A time of 49.91 secs for Thomas Barr in the 400m hurdles proved the highlight of last night’s Le Cheile International which marked the opening of the club’s new track at Leixlip.
Barr gave an exhibition run, finishing comfortably clear of Australian visitor Ian Dewhurst. On a chilly night with some strong winds, Sam McEntee of Australia won the mile in 3 mins 58 secs, with newly-minted Irish international athlete Kevin Batt third in 3:59. Highlight of the women’s programme was the 800m, where Leevale’s Laura Crowe beat Rose Anne Galligan of Newbridge. Her time was 2 mins 4 secs won by Laura Crowe of In the women’s 1500m, Maria McCambridge of DSD won in 4 mins 19 secs.
MARK CHRISTIE beat his Mullingar Harriers clubmate Martin Fagan to win the St Coca’s 5km in Kilcock in 14 mins 6 secs. It was a first defeat for Fagan since returning from a two-year drugs ban. Charlotte Kearney of Donadea was first woman.
HAMMER THROWER Conor McCullough is switching his national allegiance back to the USA after two years wearing an Irish vest. McCullough’s father Conor senior is a two-times Irish Olympian who emigrated to the USA.
McCullough represented USA when he became the world junior champion at hammer in 2010, two years after winning silver at the same event. He is the son of two-time Irish Olympian Conor McCullough Snr, but was born and reared in California.
McCullough competed in Santry at the Irish nationals in 2011 and 2012 and, in July 2012, when he first switched allegiance, threw an Irish U-23 record of 75.09 metres. The ‘A’ standard for the 2012 Olympics was ridiculously high (78m), but 74.96m subsequently made the final in London and 75.09 would have ranked him ninth in that final.
McCullough first wore the Irish vest officially in autumn 2012, but has now submitted a transfer request to rejoin USAT&F.
