Barbara Cleary of Donore Harriers, who has posted some fast times on the roads in recent weeks, was the surprise winner of the Flora 32nd Women’s Mini Marathon today in a time of 34 mins 7 secs.
Cleary ran with Maria McCambridge of DSD for the first half of the race and broke away at around 6km, when the course turned back to town on the Stillorgan Road. McCambridge, who must wonder what she has to do to win this race, finished in 34 mins 29 secs, with three times previous winner Catherina McKiernan of Cornafean third in 34 mins 38 secs.
Also breaking 35 minutes was the much improved Sarah Mulligan who, like McCambridge, is a member of host club DSD. She passed Finn Valley’s Teresa McGloin in the later stages of the race. Orla Drumm of Crusaders was next, followed by last year’s winner Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane, wearing No 1.
Cleary, originally from Co Clare, first burst on the scene in 2012, when she won the Dunshaughlin 10km (a hilly course) in 34 mins 52 secs and then finished second in the National Half Marathon. Later in the year, she narrowly failed to take gold at the British and Irish Masters’ Cross-Country in Belfast after misjudging the location of the finish line. After a break with injury, she has been back on the roads since the start of the year. Most recently, she won the Bob Heffernan 5km in Enfield in 16 mins 21 secs.
Because of Luas works in Dublin’s city centre, the course took in a new route with less twists and turns, which may account for the fast times.
GREAT TO have Catherine Walsh of Fingallians back in action and winning her umteenth WMM visually impaired title in a decent time of 48 mins 58 secs (with Barbara Tobin for company). Catherine started her sporting career as an athlete and won a Paralympic bronze medal for pentathlon. She then switched to cycling for London 2012 where she took more medals. Like Catherina McKiernan, she’s now officially “retired” – but clearly there’s no stopping this pair of super athletes!
AMONG THOSE COMPLETING their 32nd WMM were Mary Butler and Betty Behan of Blackrock AC, Mary O Colmain of Crusaders and Betty Hand from Blanchardstown.
