In the absence of Irish No 1 Scott Evans, Jonathan Dolan won his first Irish title at the National Badminton Championships, held in Baldoyle. Dolan beat Irish junior international Joshua Magee in the men’s singles final, having dismissed Ulster player Tony Stephenson who is aiming for Commonwealth Games selection in the earlier stages of the tournament.
Double Olympian Chloe Magee was taking her eighth consecutive title when she beat her niece Rachael Darragh in the women’s singles final. Darragh, who is only 16, will represent Ireland at the European U17 Championships European next month.
In a good weekend for Jonathan Dolan, he also won the men’s doubles, paired with Sam Magee. They beat Ryan Stewart and Ciaran Chambers 21-13, 21-9 in the final.
Caroline Black and Sinead Chambers, another Ulster pair aiming for Commonwealth selection, beat Jennie King and Rachael Darragh to take the women’s doubles title.

No surprises in the U15 Championships, where 13-year-oldNhat Nguyen, who has already taken the U17 title this season, beat Paul Reynolds 21-11 21-15 for the boy’s singles title. Rachael Woods won the girl’s singles title beating Beth Stephenson 21-19 21-18. Nhat also took the doubles title, paired with Munster’s Brian O’Mahony.
