Schools All-Irelands: 400m/800m Double for Purcell (results added)

Harry Purcell of Castleknock College set a new Irish schools record of 1:49.42 on his way to victory in the senior boys’ 800m at the Aviva All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore today.

After a fast opening lap, Purcell  held on to win from Gormanston’s Rob Tully, with both breaking Sean Tobin’s 2013 record of 1:50.65. He then went on to win the 400m title in 47.83 secs. The only down point in his day was when he pulled up in the  4x100m with a hamstring tear. He still got the much-coveted Athlete of the Meet award.

A lot closer was the senior girls’ 800m, where Alanna Lally from Pres Athenry  outsprinted Aislinn Crossey of SH Newry, finishing in 2 mins 8 secs. In the senior girls’ 1500m, Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of Colaiste Iosagain  stretched her unbeaten record  and won her 14th All Ireland schools title in a remarkable careeeer that also includes All Ireland records in every age group.  Her time of 4:25.43 was off  Ciara Mageean’s record, but put her comfortably clear of  Ella Fennelly from Mount Anville.

A double winner on the day was Kevin Mulcaire of St Flannan’s, Ennis. He started his day by breaking the 36- -year-old record in the inter 3000m and, an hour or so later, added the 1500m title to his haul. Also winning on the double was multi-eventer Sam Healy of Carrigaline CS. He  jumped 7.20m for victory in the senior long jump and also won the 100m hurdles in 14.26.

Winning the inter boys’ 800m in 1:55.34 was Leinster champion Mustafa Nasir of HFCS Rathcoole, with Gary Campbell of Dundalk Grammar second in 1:56.22 and Conal Hayes of Col Chiarain third in 1:57.14. Nasir was also third  in the 1500m behind Kevin Mulcaire.

Carla Sweeney of St Mac Dara’s added to her collection of titles when she won the inter girls’ 800m comfortably  in 2 mins 11 secs. Molly Scott of Colaiste Chonglais won the inter 80m hurdles in 11.68, and was fourth in the 100m.  Winning the senior 100m hurdles was Shannon Dawkins of St Mary’s New Ross; Dawkins was also second in the high jump.

Isabel Carron of Skerries Community Schools beat Clodagh O’Reilly from Loreto Cavan to win the inter girls’ 3000m in 10 mins 20.24 secs. Adding the senior 1500m title to the cross-country title he won earlier this season was Andrew Coscoran of St Mary’s Drogheda, with his time of 4:10.59 enough to see off the challenge of David Harper from Rice College Westport. On a good day for St Mary’s Drogheda, Aaron Hanlon won the 1500m in 15 mins 5 secs, with David Mulhare of Portloaise CBS second. Winning the senior girls’ 3000m was Deirdre Healy of  the Institute of Education, with Aoife Richardson from Loreto Kilkenny a close second.

Taking the junior 1500m title in style was international schools cross-country champion Paddy Maher of Dunshaughlin CC. His time of 4:14.27 left him over five seconds clear of Daragh Finn from St Declan’s Cabra.

In the hurdles, Brandon Arrey of Davis College Mallow ran a superb 54.28 secs to win the senior boys’ 400m hurdles – and then helped his school to 4x100m victory over Blackrock. Simon Essuman of Templeogue College won the inter race in 56.47 sec, while Katie McGowan won the senior girls’ 400m hurdles in 62.30 secs.

Winning the senior girls’ 100m was  Niamh McNicol who beat Leinster champion Mary Kate Lacey of Loreto Kilkenny  only after  the photofinish was closely examined, with both girls given a time of 12.24.   Cliodhna Manning, also Loreto Kilkenny, was third, and later  beat McNichol to win an equally closely-run  200m, with Lacey third.

Zak Irwin of Sligo Grammar was pushed all the way to the line but still came out on top in the senior boys’ 100m, breaking the line in 10.76 secs. On a day of sprint doubles, he also won the 200m.  Sean Lawlor of Kylemore College won the inter boys’ 100m in 11.20 secs, beating Eoin Doherty of Drimnagh Castle. Gina Akpe Moses of St Vincent’s Dundalk underlined her huge potential with victory in the inter girls 100m in 12.01 secs, beating Megan Marrs of Strathearn Holywood, and also won the 200m.

A clear winner of the junior girls’ 200m was Lauren Ryan from Crescent Limerick in 24.96 secs. In the junior boys’ 200m, Aaron Sexton of Bangor Grammar just edged it in 22.70 secs.

Over 400m, Brian Masterson of Blackrock College  was the winner  in 49.36 secs after running down Scott Gibson of Bandon GS who unfortunately fell with the line in sight.

In the boys’ senior high jump, Jamie Murtagh of Ashbourne Community College and David Cussen of CSN Cork jumped 2.05m and then attempted 2.10m before Murtagh took the title on countback. Sabine Halley of Sion Hill won the inter girls long jump – her first national title – with a leap of 5.42m.

There was a big throw of 17.27m from John Kelly of Royal and Prior Raphoe to win the senior boys’ shot; brother James won the juniro title with 14.06m. No surprises in the senior girls’ hammer won by Alice Akers of Scarriff CC with a throw of 51.31m. In the inter girls hammer, Katelyn Furlong of Col Abain set a new record of 47.61, while Kate O’Connor of St Vincent’s Dundalk managed the day’s most unusual double, setting a new record of  40.77m in the junior javelin  just after winning the 800m.

Overall, Belvedere College  won the best school award for the 16th year in a row.

* A number of schools stars were missing in action yesterday – they were part of the Irish team at the European Youth Olympic Trails in Baku. Among them were Pierre Murchan of St Declan’s Cabra, Elizabeth Morland of Dunshaughlin Community College, Anne Marie Torsney of Loreto Swords and Michaela Walsh from Swinford, all of them likely medal winners in Tullamore.
