Roads: David McCarthy wins Galway Bay 10k. Record numbers at NI Relays

IMG_8028

West Waterford’s David McCarthy made a welcome return to racing when he won the Galway Bay 10km in a time of 31 mins 15 secs. Raheny’s Conor Dooney was a close second, with Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane first women in 35 mins 10 secs.

The half marathon was won by 34-year-old Moldovan Prodius Roman in 66 mins 03 secs, an quality athlete who qualified for the marathon at the London Olympics. Second was Donore’s John Travers in 66 mins 3 secs while third was David McCarthy of West Waterford (yes, that’s what it says in the results). We see that the 10km started at 9.30am and the half at 11am, so maybe it’s possible. First woman was Grainne Ni Uallachain of GCH.

Barry Minnock of Rathfarnham  won the marathon in 2:27.35, beating Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon back after a bit of a break. First woman was Nicola Cosgrave.

EOIN CALLAGHAN of Star of the Sea and DSD’s Fiona Clinton were the winner of the 32nd Simon 5 mile held in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. A feature of the races was the numbers of  schools teams entered, with individual names not included in the overall results. So although we suspect it was Eoin Brady of Hartstown Community College who finished fourth, we’re not sure.

Well done to all the Hartstown students as well as those from the High School in Rathgar,  St Dominic’s Cabra,  Moyle Park, Castleknock Community College, Beneavin DLS, St Michael’s, Holy Child Killiney, Mount Anville, Our Lady of Mercy,   and St Patrick’s Cathedral Grammar School who lined out. There were also big groups from Deutsche Bank and Susquehanna Ireland.

ROBERT COBALLY  of organising club DSD won the inaugural Spirit Motor Group Twlight 5km  around the Sandyford industrial estate. A total of 95 teams had entered the race.

IN BELFAST, record numbers turned out for the NI Road Relays – 63  women’s teams and 73 men’s. That’s 136 in total and over 500 runners, all of them active running club members.  Newcastle won the senior women’s title, with North Belfast Harriers best of the men. So why don’t these teams come down to Dublin for the National Road Relays in March? Are they invited?
