Ciara Mageean of UCD ran a personal best 4 mins 35.47 secs to finish second in the Great North Run Mile at Newcastle yesterday. The race was won by Scotland’s Laura Muir in 4:34.84. Donore’s John Travers finished 7th in the men’s mile with a time of 4:03.68.
In the much-hyped 30th anniversary Great North Run itself, Breege Connolly from Belfast was the only Irish athlete to snag an invite and she finished 15th woman in 79 mins 52 secs.
Over in Rieti, Italy, Clonliffe’s Brian Gregan finished his season on a high when he ran 32.85 secs for 300m, putting him second only to Paul Hession with a time of 32.47 secs on the all-time Irish list. A tired Paul Robinson of St Coca’s finished 13th in the 1500m in 3:45.23, while Mark English of UCD was 7th in the 800m in 1:45.71.
At the BMC Track Festival 10,0000m in Stretford, Clonliffe’s Sarah McCormack clocked a time of 33 mins 38 secs in a mixed race.
PAUL ROBINSON was just outside Davis Matthews’ Irish record when he finished 10th place in the 1,000m in 2:18.46 at the Diamond League finale in Brussels last Friday evening. Matthews’ record stands at 2:17.58.
