Round-Up: McGee, Connick Win Inter Cross-Country; McCarthy and Reed Are Top Masters

Michelle McGee of Brothers PLIN_9382earse dominated the women’s race at the Woodie’s DIY National Intermediate Cross-Country Championships in Dunboyne.  Although the wind – strong enough to see three tents blown away – had  died down, the underfoot at the Cow Park was challenging from the start.

McGee, who won the national novice title last December, went into an immediate lead and  lead on to it until the close.  She finished 20 seconds ahead of international mountain runner Kate Cronin of Raheny.  With Chloe Doran third  and Fiona Stack fourth, Raheny Shamrock won the team category easily, with St Finbarr’s second and North Sligo third.

Andrew Connick of Ferrybank, runner-up in the National Novice Cross-Country last December, won the men’s 8km, with  Tim O’Donoghue of East Cork second and Gerard Gallagher of Finn Valley third.  Finn Valley took team gold ahead of East Cork and Rathfarnham WSAF.

Huge numbers turned out for the master’s races, and it was Maria McCarthy of Farranfore  who won a closely fought battle with Mayo’s Colette Tuohy and  Dublin champion Elish Kelly of Raheny to take the women’s title. A fighting fourth was previous champion Pauline Curley of Tullamore. There was an astounding run from many times world champion Carmel Parnell, who finished first over 55 and 14th overall.

Declan Reed of City of Derry was first of the master men, ahead of the vastly experienced Pauric McKinney of Inishowen, who was first M45,  Donore’s  John Dunne and Mayo ultra man John Byrne. Mick Byrne of Sli Cualann was first  M50 only a year after major heart surgery. Winning the shorter 4km race for  the M65+ age groups was Pat Collins of Liffey Valley.  Raheny Shamrock, led home by Des Kennedy in fifth place,  was first team ahead of  Rathfarnham WSAF, led by Barry Miinnock in ninth place.

Karl Griffin of  UCD, who took silver in the 800m at the National Indoors, won the 400m with a time of49.47, while DSD’s Siofra Cleirigh Buttner took the women’s 800m in 2:06.98.

* Barbara Sanchez, who has transferred from Raheny Shamrock to Clonliffe Harriers,  finished fifth in the Seville Marathon with a time of 2 hrs 43 min 28 secs.

* Paul Robinson of St Coca’s  ran 3:9.56 in the mile at the Perth Track Classic in Australia, finishing third. In Christchurch,  Riocht’s Laura Crowe ran the 800m, finishing second in 2:08.23 while Mark Hanrahan  of Leevale was second in the 3,000m  with a time of 8:20.77.

* Noelie Kavanagh  and Rhona Duane were the winners of the Wicklow Hospice 10km in Avondale, Rathdrum.  John Frazer and Paula Prendergast  of Mayo were first home in the half marathon.

* Michael Herlihy of North Cork and Barbara Cleary , who ran with Donore last season, were the winners at the Adare 10km in Co Limerick.
