Joe Warne and Catherina McKiernan led home over 2,200 starters at the second Remembrance Run 5km in Dublin
‘s Phoenix Park.
In perfect conditions for running, Warne came home in 15 mins 2 secs – just five seconds ahead of Donegal master Ciaran O’Doherty. Kristaps Valters of Clonliffe Harriers was third. Managing to break 20 minutes – just! – was former Irish 800m champion David Matthews.
McKiernan who still holds the Irish women’ record for the marathon, set off wearing No 1 on her vest and finished tenth overall and No 1 of the women by some distance. Her time of 17 mins 20 secs put her well over a minute clear of the chasers led by Aoife Brady, with Sandra Bowe third ahead of Sinead Hartnett. Well done also to Catherina’s daughter Deirbhile, who finished in 20.52 – first junior?
* Dublin athletes dominated the Leinster Inter Cross-Country in Scotstown. Rahenys’ Karen Crossan and Karol Cronin of Sportsworld were the individual winners, with Sports beating Liffey Valley to take the men’s team medals and Liffey Valley packing well for the women’s title.
* John Byrne of host club Mayo and Galway’s Regina Casey were the winners at the 48th annual Hollymount Road Races in Co Mayo. Mayo took both teams titles. Athletes from Liverpool Harriers and John Moores University made their annual pilgrimage to the small Mayo village for the race.
