Joe Gough of West Waterford is again world champion after a clear win in the M60 800m at the World Masters Indo
ors in Daegu, South Korea.
Gough – at 64 the oldest in the field – clocked a brilliant time of 2 mins 19.17 secs to beat his old rival Oleksandr Lysenko from the Ukraine who had run the fastest time in the heats. Lysenko clocked 2:22.81 with Wolfgang Kreemke of Germany third in 2:23.38.
As if that wasn’t enough, Mark O’Shea of Drogheda and District then won a competitive M45 800m in 2:07.12. On his heels was Peter Brady of the USA in 2:07.72.
The Irish celebrations continued when Ann Woodlock of Donore Harriers won the W75 3000m in 16 mins 45.57. In the W50 pole vault, Geraldine Finegan came second with 2.00m.
In the M55 800m final, Dunboyne’s Michael Cornyn finished fifth in 2:19.62. In the men’s 200m, it was semi-finals day with Shane Sheridan of DSD finishing second in the first M55 heat with a time of 25.29 secs – a new Irish age group record. Heat winner was the American William Yelverton in 24.86 secs. Winning the second semi-final was Neil Tunstal in 25.86 and it looks like the medals will be decided between these three.
Tomorrow, defending champion Brian Lynch of NER goes in the M60 3000m. Also running over this distance are Paul Cowhie M50, Ian Egan, Dermott Shortall M45, and Paul Fleming M40. Snezana Bechtina W35 and Shane Sheridan M55 go in the 200 finals, while Geraldine Finegan competes in the W50 800m and the 60m hurdles heats.
