Kevin Ankrom, Athletics Ireland’s High Performance Director, has resigned.
He will return to his native USA with his young family. Ankrom was appointed to the position of HP director in 2011; his brief was to establish a structure for the organisation of elite athletics in this country – and to win medals for Ireland.
He had previously worked with Athletics New Zealand Athletics in a similar position and before that with the Hong Kong Sports Institute. His career began in 1991 when he worked as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois and other colleges in the area.
Irish athletics has made steady progress since his arrival, culminating in the encouraging performances by the team overall at the recent Rio Olympics. “I believe that a good system is in place and ready to evolve over the next four to eight years and beyond”, Ankrom says. He will remain available to Athletics Ireland over the next few months while the search for his successor begins.
