Masters All Irelands: Paddy Hamilton in 5000m/1500m double

New master Paddy Hamilton of Slieve Gullion Runners proved one of the stars  of today’s Glo Health National Masters Track and Field Championships in Tullamore.

Hamilton was an imperious winner of the men’s 5000m in 15 mins 8.53 secs. Second overall and first M40 was Declan Reed of City of Derry Spartans in 15:27.49. Later in the afternoon, Hamilton won the M35 1500m in 4:09.15 after a battle to the line with Denis Coughlan of St Finbarr’s who finished in 4:09.24. Coghlan had earlier won the 800m  in 2:03.00.

Over 800m, world masters indoor champion Kelly Neely from City of Lisburn ended her season with victory in the W35 race in 2:22.54. In the W40 race, Niamh Fitzgerald of Lucan Harriers went even faster, winning in 2:20.76, with Caitriona Devine (formerly McGranaghan) second in 2:23.56.

In the absence of world champion Joe Gough, Terry Clarke of Rathfarnham WSAF won the M60 800m title.  Brian Lynch of North East Runners, another world masters’ champion,  won the M60 1500m in 4:45.99.

Overall winner of the women’s 1500m in 4:48.08 was Anne Gilshinan of Menapians, who was also first W50, beating Denise Toner from Clones who was first W35.

Fastest in the women’s 3000m was Michelle Kenny in 10:29.96; Jackie Carty of Kilmore ran 10:334.11 to win W45 gold, while Cathy McCourt from Belfast was first W40 in 10:52.28.

Among those who picked up several medals was thrower Sean Breathnach of Galway City Harriers, Breathnach, who is the national shot put champion many times over, started his day by finished a close second in the M35 hammer and went on to

win the discus and javelin as well as his specialist shot, where he threw 16.99m.

Another multiple medal winner was sprinter Shane Sheridan of DSD winner of the M55 100m, 200m and 400m. Riocht’s Ger Cremin won the M35 100m and, later, the 110m hurdles. One of the closest races of the day was the M50 400, where former international sprinter Paul Francis of Crusaders came out on top in 58.45 secs,  beating Pat Crossan of St Anne’s who finished in 58.40 secs and Stepehn Flavin of Croghan in 59.00 secs.

Mayo AC was having a good day, with Pauline Moran winning the W60 800m and 1500m, Margaret Glavey in a class of her own in the W65 800m, 1500m and 3000m, and Anne Murray second W50 1500m.
