A thrilling Ronnie Delany 1500m proved the highlight of the Le Cheile International in Leixlip, with local athlete Paul Robinson just pipped for victory by Australian visitor Jordy Williamsz.
Williamsz finished in 3 mins 43.16 secs and Robinson in 3:4343. Chasing them hard was Raheny’s Kieran Kelly who finished in 3:4350, with last year’s winner Tom Lancashire fourth in 3:43.67. Junior international Kevin McGrath of Bohemeen was fifth in 3:46.14. Winning the women’s race was Emma Mitchell of Queen’s in 4:18.66. Her clubmate Katie Kirk was second in 4:22.38.
Christine McMahon was a comfortable winner of the women’s 400m hurdles in 56.97 secs. Second was Sarah Wells from Canada in 57.86. With Paul Byrne a non-starter, Spanish athlete Sergio Fernandez won the men’s 400m hurdles in 50.43.
First home in the men’s 400m was comeback kid David Gillick of DSD. His time of 47.02 was enough to hold off the challenge of Grant Plenderleith from Australia who finished in 48.08. “Last race of a very enjoyable season,” tweeted Gillick afterwards.
In the sprints, Nigerian athlete Stephanie Kalu won the women’s 100m in 11.71, while Kilkenny’s Cliodhna Manning won the 200m in 24.57. Leon Reid of Birchfield Harriers made it a double in the men’s races. He won the 100m in 10.67 despite a -2.4 headwind, and the 200m in 21.26 secs. Reid’s mother comes from Northern Ireland and the 22-year-old declared for the province a few years ago.
Kat Marshall of New Zealand set a new stadium record when winning the 800m in 2:04.13. Scotland’s Katy Brown was a close second in 2:04.22 and Reeve Walcott Nolan third in 2:04.28. Best of the Irish was Lisburn’s Kelly Neely fourth in 2:05.99. Dean Cronin of Blarney won the men’s 800m in 1:20.26, with Ferrybank’s Niall Tuohy second in 1:51.34.
A clear winner of the men’s 300m was Leevale’s Mark Hanrahan in 8:16.11. Full results at www.irishmilersclub.org/results-page.
