Ciobanu smashes 5-mile record. Gold for Gough, Neely at Euro Masters. Cullen runs 15:26

sergiu-2014-2-210x160Santry Stadium witnessed a new Irish track record last night when Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers  ran a time of 24 mins 14.8 seconds  to win the Frank White 5 Mile – a rare track five mile race.
Ciobanu was breaking the 70 year record  of  24:22.4.set by set by Martin Egan of Shanaglish, Gort, Co Galway  in 1946. Egan, an athlete of some note, won no less than 30 Irish titles, as well as holding track record for both the 5 and 4 mile distances, which were commonplace at track meets of the time. With the arrival of metric measurements, these races died out; the last national 5-mile champion was John Buckley of St Finbarr’s.
With no pacers to help him along, Ciobanu, who had run the World Half Marathon only five days earlier, was on his own almost for the start. Almost 50 athletes has signed up for the race and diligent officials ensured that he was given a clear passage as he lapped  the slower runners over twenty-plus laps.
The racer launched this year’s Clonliffe Grand Prize with the next race the McDonald Cup 4-Mile track race taking place on April 14.
SLIGO’S Mary Cullen ran 15 mins 26 secs  to finish 2nd in the 5000m at the Stanford International in Palo Alto, California – just two seconds off the Rio standard of 15:26. Hugh Armstrong ran 29:16 in the men’s 10,000m.

In the M60, Gough timed his effort to perfection tracking the leader until the bell and then moving to the front for a clear win.  Neely was an equally impressive winner of the W35 race.  Other gold medal winners earlier  in the week went to Brian Lynch of North Easter Runners in the M60 3000m, his  NER clubmate Geraldine Finnegan  in the W50 pentathlon and Sean McMullen in the M70 3k walk.
In the W40 800m, Niamh Fitzpatrick of Lucan Harriers finished third, with Karen Crean fourth in a very tight finish.  In other 3000m races, Denise Toner was secondW35 , Frank Reilly second M70 3000m, Stuart Maloney 3rd in the M35 3000m; in the W75 race, Ann Woodlock was just pipped for silver. In the M55 3km track walk, Pat Murphy was 3rd.
