At home, 34 of the 35 teams completed the 11th annual Wicklow Way Relay from Kilmashogue to Shillelagh.
Among them were four teams from Meath – Dunboyne, Dunshaughlin, St Brigid’s and Trim – Donadea and Le Ceile from Kildare and Athenry from Co Galway. Also lining out were the usual suspects from Rathfarnham WSAF, Crusaders, UCD, Sli Cualann and Raheny Shamrock , along with orienteering clubs 3ROC and Setanta (plus strays from GEN, Cork O, Ajax and Fingal), Wicklow Mountain Rescue, and a number of triathletes.
Conditions were very warm for all the teams. Raheny led initially, but by the fourth of the eight legs into Glendalough, Rathfarnham had taken over in front. They then built steadily on that lead to the end, finishing the 127km course in 7 hrs 9 mins 52 secs.
In the battle for second place, The After 8’s managed by Mick Hanney just edged out All the cthe President’s Team, anchored by IMRA president Dermot Murphy and managed by ex-prez Vivian O’Gorman. For most of the 30-odd teams, finishing was the goal, with the the last team coming home just before 6 o’clock.
Well done to new race organiser Stuart Scott – this is a race with no “goodies”, no prizes, no t-shirt, no chipped timing and it provides the best day out of the year.
