A new name and a new look for the RSA Terenure 5-Mile, formerly knowm as the Dublin 5-Mile Classic, paid off in Terenure today (Sun), with over 1,100 registering for the Sportsworld-organised race.
Leading them home was Rathfarnham veteran Paul Fleming in a time of 26 mins 03 secs; a close second was Pat McCartan with Eoin Brennan third. First for the home club was Paul O’Connell, who just outsprinted his clubmate Paul Duffy for fourth place.
In a neat coincidence, Paul is a nephew of Emily Dowling, who, with husband Mick, founded the race 27 years ago.

Raheny Shamrock totally dominated the women’s race, with the top four places going to the northside club. Aoife Talty, fresh from her course record at the RTE 5-Mile, was first home in 28.03, followed by Fiona Roche, Annette Kealy, and Barbara Sanchez who runs the Copenhagen Marathon next week.

Helping on the sidelines were members of the South Dublin Special Olympics Club who will benefit to the tune of over €10,000 from the race.
No-one went hungry after their run, with enough tea, sandwiches, cake and biscuits to feed double the number while everyone waited in their new technical t-shirts to see if they would take home one of the many spot prizes on offer.
A full year of preparation went into re-establishing this race as one of the best on the calendar. On PR advice Sportworld took the name “classic” out of the title; way too hard core for the iPod generation!

* Not such a great day apparently at the Kildare Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km. From Pat Byrne (credited with the 10km win) on Facebook: “Some mess up today at Kildare 10k and marathon; top two sent the wrong way with 300m to go and end up running extra two miles in the marathon. Same in the 10km with top two sent wrong way with 500m to go. I just happened to be in 3rd place, went the right way and ended up with 300 reasons why I am a lucky sod. PS: they looked after the two lads with the proper prizes.”
Because Freddy Keron Sittok and Noel Kelly were sent the wrong way, Peter Mooney was first to cross the line in the marathon. Brian McMahon was the main victim in the 10km;the organisers apologised on behalf of the marshal and offered the cash prize for first place of €300 to both runners.
* Race walker Colin Griffin of Ballinamore achieved the Olympic A standard for the 50km walk at the World Cup of Race Walking, Saransk, Russia. Griffin finished 15th in 3:52.55 after receiving two warnings in the opening 10km. Jamie Costin’s hopes of making a fourth Olympics were dashed when he dropped out; Michael Doyle was another non-finisher.
In the women’s 20km, Olive Loughnane finished eighth 1:31.32 and Laura Reynolds 35th in 1:37:06 after a promising start.
* Mairead Murphy set a new Irish heptathlon record when finishing fourth at the Big 12 Conference, Kansas. She scored 5399 points (100m hurdles 13.88, high jump 1.63, shot 11.31, 200m 24.61, long jump 5.66, javelin 31.59, 800m 2:18.8) adding five points to the previous record held by Sharon Foley.
