Robinson, Byrne Jingle to Victory

Paul Robinson of St Coca’s and DSD’s Linda Byrne were the winners of the Jingle Bells 5km held on a glorious day in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
In a sprint for the line, Robinson edged out Tom Fitzpatrick of Tallaght to fining in a fast time of 14 mins 18 secs.  MSB’s John Coghlan was third.
Linda Byrne, using the race as a final blow-out before next week’s European Cross-Country, was chased home by the in-form Kerry Harty of Newcastle.
A very special finisher was Sarah Nagle, who walked the course  in memory of her late husband Joe. 
Before his untimely death in August, Joe was a mainstay of the  race, taking part in very single one of them since the early days in Docklands and always dressed for the part. 
Continuing the tradition, Sarah was beautifully turned out as Mrs Santa Claus, with Joe’s brother Larry and other family members. keeping her company.   
At the Waterford Half Marathon, Philip Harty of West Waterford scored a notable win over Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon, winning with a five second margin in 67 mins 29 secs. Ferrybank’s Andrew Connick was third, with only three runners breaking 70 minutes. First woman in 80 mins 36 secs was Clonmel’s Angela McCann. 

* Elizabeth Morland of Dunshaughlin CC  finished 2nd and Niamh Healy of SH Drogheda third U-16 at the schools’ indoor combined events  internationa,  Emirates Arena, Glasgow. With solid backing from Laura Cussen and Vickie Cusack, the Irish team finished 2nd. .
Niamh Quinn proved best of the U-18 girls after Grace McKenzie of Scoil Mhuire Crosshaven was controversially disqualified in the final 800m.
Of the boys, Daniel Ryan was 6th U-16;  the U18 boys, led by  Sam Healy  of Carrigaline CS in eight place finished third team.
