Mulhare, McCarthy

Fionnuala Britton was a clear winner of the women’s three-mile race at the Gerry Farnan/Sheila Brennan Cross-Country races in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Britton, the European champion,  was in imperious form with her time of  15 mins 36 secs putting her over a minute ahead of the chasers. In second place was Scotland-based Sarah McCormack, while third was Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane.
In the men’s 5-mile race, David McCarthy of West Waterford and Portlaoise’s Michael Mulhare ran together for the middle stages of the race before McCarthy pulled away for victory. Third was national champion Eddie McGinley of Annadale.  There were also many fine masters’ performances; the team for the British and Irish International will be announced on Wednesday. Some pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com; more to come.
* Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham won the Clane 10km in a final blow-out before his debut marathon in Dublin next week. Martin Fagan made a low-key return to competition at the Katie Nugent Duathlon, finishing second. TJ Kearns, possibly the former hurdler, was first U-50.
* John Byrne of Mayo AC  finished a brilliant fifth at the  IAU World Trophy 50km (31.1 miles) race in Italy.  Participants faced eight laps of the 6.25km ‘Lungo il Mare’ course at the coastal towns of Vallecrosia-Bordigheria where the condtions were warm and windy.
Race winner was English athlete Steven Way in 2hrs 54 mins with the top three breaking three hours. Byrne finished in  3 hrs 10 mins,  starting conservatively and moving into  sixth place after 16 miles, and then fifth after  20 miles.  With the heat taking its toll, he fell back to sixth with four miles to go, but fought his way back to regain fifth place.  Full report at www.mayoac.com; thanks to Tom Hunt.
* Ten-times world champion Thierry Gueorgiou from France duly won the longest course at the Leinster League orienteering event in Carlingford. His time of 81 mins 8 secs put him almost ten minutes ahead of Cork O’s Darren Burke.  Gueorgiou was in Ireland as part of a training weekend for the Irish squad at Tollymore.
