Results Round-Up March 31- April 1 (ongoing)

Alistair Cragg of Clonliffe Harriers  set a new Irish and European road 5km best time of  13 mins 26 secs at the Carlsbad 5000, where he finished sixth behind Ethiopian Dejen Gebremeskel.
Next up for Cragg  is the  Stanford Invite where he will attempt a 1500m and 5ooom double. Also heading for Stanford is   Fionnuala Britton of Kilcoole AC who is targeting the Olympic A-Standard of 15:20 for 5000m.
* Mayo AC’s inaugural ‘Running Backwards’ race took place at the track in Claremorris on  Sunday April 1 (writes Tom Hunt) .
Backward running, also known as backwards running, running backwards, reverse running, retro running, or retro locomotion is the act of running in reverse. This form of exercise and competition is popular worldwide (see web links below) and has a lot of cardiovascular and other benefits, not least a reminder of the essence of sport – fun!
A welcome return to reality, after a decade of  “Going Forward” when we lost the run of ourselves.
And so on this sunny Sunday morning at Claremorris track, a small but enthusiastic field (29) ‘heeled’ the line for this novel event.
Over the  1500m distance, fairly simple rules applied. After the start, a  two-metre gap had to be maintained between a participant and the person ‘behind’ (or is that in front of?) them.
This was tricky and some competitors fell over themselves attemtpting overtaking manoeuvres in the frantic closing stages. However, winner Seamus Gallagher from The Neale  has undoubtedly mastered the unique technique, showing a clean pair of heels to all behind him.

He backed across the line in a respectable 5 mins 57 secs. First woman was veteran Lucinda Nic Gealailt from Geesala in 6.61.  Most of the finishers said they were looking forward to
running backwards again next year.

Hilary and Caroline Casey

Almost  300 turned out for the inaugural NBCI 10km over a two-lap course in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. First home was Declan Power in 32 mins 56 secs. First woman was Paula Prendregast in 42.32, while achieving her target of breaking her 2011 winning Women’s Mini Marathon time of 53 minutes was visually impaired athete Hilary Casey. Paced by her sister Caroline, Hilary ran an excellent time of 50 mins 22 secs.
* World 100km champion Giorgio Calcaterra won the ultra event at the Connemarathon  in 3 hours 56 minutes. Over 3,000 took part in the ultra, marathon and half marathon.
* Sergiu Ciobanu,  second last year, was an emphatic winner  of Saturday’s Omagh Half Marathon, in a new course record time of 64 mins 59 ses. Last year’s winner Stephen Duncan finished second. Former Irish marathon international Tommy Hughes was eight overall in 74.52 and first M50. The veteran Donna Evans was first woman in 83.39.

* Abroad, triathlete Aileen Morrison finished a gutsy second at the opening European Cup triathlon in Quarteira, Portugal. A superb run saw Morrison move from seventh after the cycle into the runners-up place, just 26 seconds behind Ainhoa Murua of Spain.
Her result should see Morrison improve on her current Olympic qualification ranking of  eleventh, with her place at London 2012 almost assured.
Result: 1 Ainhoa Munua ESP 2:03.01; 2 Aileen Morrison IRL 2:03.27; 3 Carole Peon FRA 2:03.43; 4 Irina Abysova RUS 2:04.26.

* Annadale’s Eddie McGinley had an outstanding run for the winning Liverpool Harriers team at the Northern 12-Stage Relay in Liverpool.
The Irish cross-country champion’s time of 22 mins 37 secs was the fastest in the 9th stage and  helped Liverpool to a 96 seconds victory over  Salford AC from a huge total of 47 teams.
