* Derval O’Rourke warmed up for the 100m hurdles at the Woodie’s DIY national T-F Championships in Santry, but a sudden back spasm forced her to withdraw at the last minute from an attempt on her tenth national title. A day earlier, O’Rourke, now 31, had run times of 13.27 and 13.20 in Loughborough.
Paul Hession, another experienced campaigner, dropped down to the 100m and ran a time of 10.37 just edging out Jason Smyth.
In the women’s 800m, Siobhan Eviston produced a devastating burst of speed to catch Laura Crowe in the chase for the line.
Deirdre Ryan, like Hession and O’Rourke, a member of the London 2012 squad, won the high jump comfortably, going over 1.80m. Also London-bound is Joanne Cuddihy though an umseemly row over the 4x400m selection process marred her 400m victory.
For a second year, American-based Conor McCullough won the hammer with a tremendous throw of 72.51. Dave Donegan won his sixth pole vault title, in an absorbing competition with five going over 4.60m. After making 4.70m, Donegan attempted an Irish record of 5.07, but it was not to be.
With Eoin Keith dopping out with a stomach bug and double world record holder Sharon Gayter from Teeside also forced to quite, Kerry-based Austrian Thomas Bubendorfer finished second with an impressive total of 126 miles.
Aisling Coppinger in her first 24-hour race was best of the women, running just over 100 miles.
Winning the 12-hour race with a total of 65 miles was Dubliner Sean Burke, while first in the 24-hour relay with a total of 181 miles was Donadea Running Club.
