Results Round-Up Apr 18-25 (ongoing)

A thrilling final leg saw Rathfarnham WSAF snatch the men’s title from defending champions Raheny Shamrock at the Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Road Relays  in Raheny.  Simon Ryan for Raheny and Sean Hehir for Rathfarnham had set out on the final two-mile leg together and they stayed together until the final lung-bursting sprint for the finish, with Hehir – only back from injury – just getting there first. Olympian Thomas Chamney had given Crusaders the early lead, but strong second legs by Raheny’s Feidhlim Kelly and by the veteran Paul Fleming for Rathfarnham set the tone for the rest of the race, with Barry Minnock  for Rathfarnham and Rahey’s Kevin Moriarty running shoulder-to-shoulder for the three-mile leg.
Finishing third was a strong squad from Ennis Track Club; Tallaght was fourth.  Other clubs represented included  Sli Cualann and Craughwell (with veteran Gerry Ryan on the three-mile leg).

In the women’s senior race, Dundrum South Dublin set a new course record of 21 mins 17 secs on their way to victory. Star of the team was Irish marathon champion Linda Byrne with a time of 10 mins 33 secs for the second leg. Ironically, fellow marathon woman Maria McCambridge ran an identical time  in the Letterkenny colours.  Ably backing Byrne were Niamh Devlin and Sarah Mulligan. Raheny was second and Clonliffe third.
Retaining both their men women’s over 40 titles were the host club Raheny. First over 50 men’s team was Tallaght.

* St Malachy’s Joe McAlister won the Titanic Quarter 10km in 30 mins 40 secs, with Annadale pair Eddie McGinley and Andrew Agnew second and third.Annadale was first team ahead of North Belfast Harriers.
McAlister had paced the Irish athletes at the Rotterdam Marathon only a week earlier.

Julie Turley of Dromore was first woman in 35 mins 53 secs.  Tullamore’s Pauline Curley was second and Clare Connor of North Belfast Harriers third.
* Ciara Mageean  won both the 800m and 1500m for UCD at the Irish universities T-F Championships in IT Athlone. Deirdre Ryan also turned out in the high jump for DCU. In the women’s discus, Clare Fitzgerald of UCD threw a very useful 51.22. John Coghlan of DCu won the 5000m, while Barry Pender won the high jump going over the bar at 2.11. Overall, DCU dominated with a points total of 233; UL were second on 161 followed by UCD on 152.
* An Irish team not only finished 6th at the  the World 100km Championships in Seregno, Italy but also set a  new Irish team record.

Team captain, Dan Doherty,  in 7hrs 07 mins 26 secs, was the first home of the Irish in 25th place. John Byrne 7:16.27 and Keith Whyte 7:25.56 finished not far behind for a team total  of  21:49.48. Italy was first team followed by  the USA  and France.
Michael Collins finished in 7:43.14  and 5th M45; John O’Regan, Thomas Maguire and Jim McCormick all encountered various problems and injuries during the race.
Helen Lavin, the only Irish woman in action, finished in 8:54.38.

* Olympic triathlon hopeful Aileen Morrison has finished 2nd place  at the Ishigaki ITU World Cup in Japan.  Morrison left the water in second place after the 1500m swim,  had a strong cycle, although she had a poor start to the 10km run, moved through the field and then kicked in the final few hundred metres for second place in 2 hrs 5 mins 58 secs – 2- seconds behind winner Kathy Tremblay.
In the men’s race,  Gavin Noble  did his London 2012 chances no harm by finishing 24th thanks to a strong run.
* Dave Rooney dipped under 14 minutes for the first time when he ran 13:53.03 to win a 5000m race at the Mount Sac Relays in Walnut, California.  Orla Drumm (UCC) was 7th in the women’s mile in 4:36.81, going through 1500m in 4:15.95; Darren McBrearty (Letterkenny) was 5th in the men’s 1500m in 3:43.75.
