* Noel Carroll, Stephen Moore and Patrick Malone were the first three home in last night’s Irish Prison Service BHAA Trail 5km in the Phoenix Park.  Irene Gorman, Niamh Fitzgerald and Caitriona Higgins were the first three women on a perfect night for running. Special guest was the great Gerry Curtis, who remained unbeaten in any BHAA race during the 1980s and 1990s and still holds the course record for the Raheny 5-Mile.

* In her final race before the marathon at the London Olympics, Linda Byrne ran an excellent personal best of  72 mins 32 secs to finish second overall at the Longford Half Marathon. That time would equate to a marathon of around 2 hours 32 minutes.

*Raheny pole vaulter  Zoe Brown improved her personal best to 4.20m at the Northern Ireland Team Championships, putting her second only behind American-based Tori Pena on 4.52.

* Caroline Reid of Dunboyne set a new women’s record of 17 hrs 12 mins 3 secs for the 132km Wicklow Way on Monday June 25. Caroline climbed over the Marlay Park wall at 4am on Monday morning and arrived in Clonegal just after 9pm having got faster as the day went on. Her time breaks Jane Porter’s record of 19 hours 54 mins and is the third fastest time ever.
Jane and Graham Porter and Brian Byrne ran 19 hours 54 mins in April 1998 having set the initial record of just under 24 hours (if memory serves…) on a sweltering  day in June 1997.  Hill walker Mick Rice improved on that a month later with a time of 22 hours 42 minutes,  which meant the pioneering trio had another go, knowing they could break 20 hours.
In Augsut 1998, four months later, Simon Walters upped  the ante when he completed the run in 18: 24.54  before emigrating to New Zealand. From those efforts came the idea for a Wicklow Way Relay.
After a decade-long hiatus, Eoin Keith ran 13:46.01 in September 2008 and Paul Tierney  13:38.51 in May 2011.
