Ethiopia’s Urga Negewo knocked more than a minute off the course record when he won the Deeep RiverRock Belfast Marathon in 2 hrs 13 mins 41 secs, depsite the wet and windy conditions. It was a second win in Belfast for Negewo also the winner in 2010.
Kenyan David Kipserem Kisang was second in 2:15:57, with defending champion Joseph Chesire, who had set the course record last year, third 2:18:09.
First local runner home was the veteran Tommy Hughes, the last Northern Ireland athlete to win in Belfast in 1998. He finished eighth in 2:29:43.
The course record also fell in the women’s race won by Kenyan Alice Chelangat in 2:39:02 – 20 seconds inside the time set by Marashet Jimma in 2008. Russia’s Yelena Kozevnikova was second in 2:42:10 and Wioletta Kryza of Poland third in 2:43:57.
Darrell Erwin from Ballymena was first wheelchair athlete.
