Race Results Jan 14-18(ongoing)

Record turn-out for the annual Bank of Ireland DCU Invitational Cross-Country at St Clare’s, Glasnevin, Dublin. Race of the day was the boys’ inter with Killian Kirwan of St Fintan’s coming through for a great win, passing mid-race leader Michael Healion of   Newbridge with about 200m to go. Paddy Robb of St Malachy’s also caught Healion with an impressive turn of speed in the finishing straight.

At the Woodie’s DIY Masters’ Indoors in Nenagh, Antoinette Stafford of DMP set a championship best of 5.85 to take the W35 long jump title; she also won 200m. Kevin Cogley of Menapians won a closely fought  M35 60m in 7.32, just beating Michael Downey from West Waterford. 

Liffey Valley’s Tom O’Connor added to his considerable  collection of titles when he won the M50 1500m and 3000m; for West Waterford, Joe Gough won his 60th national gold when taking the M55 400m. Raheny’s Liam Mulready made it a middle distance hat-trick winning the M65 400m, 800m and 1500m, setting a new record of 2:36.6 in the 800m, while the indestrucible Mary Sweeney of St Finbarr’s won the W50 400m, 800m and 1500m.

In the older age groups, Jim O’Neill, a former Irish record holder made a comeback in the M70 class, making a hatrick of titles in the 200m, 400m and 800m. Also making a comeback was Rathfarnham’s Joe Reville, one of the few men to have beaten the late, great Noel Carroll in his veteran years; he won the M60 400m title. 
* At the Leinster Cross-Country Championships, Raheny won three of the individual titles on offer – Mick Clohisey senior men, Fiona Roche senior women and Jake McDonald junior men. The Shamrocks also took the senior and junior men’s team titles.  Sportsworld was first of the senior women and Mulligar best of the junior women in a race won by Mary Mulhare of North Laois. 
Limerick’s Michael Carmody and Niamh O’Sullivan of Riocht took the Munster titles, where East Cork was winning its ninth consecutive men’s senior title. 
In Cardiff, a large group of Clonliffe athletes competed in the McCain Challenge with Brian McMahon 18th  in the senior race and Aaron Hanlon 17th U20.
* On the roads, Rathfarnham’s Sean Hehir set a new course record of  24.10 at the Tuam 5km, where almost 600 finished the race. 
* Off road, Eoin Keith set a new course record of  5 hrs 26 mins 5 secs when winning the Art O’Neill ultra from Dublin Castle to Glenmalure.
