Have just had a nostalgic look at The Penisula, which I read every day while in Qatar. Nothing much has changed!
“A criminal court in Doha last week ordered a young Arab expatriate to be deported after he was found guilty of peeping into others’ houses to watch women sleeping.
The court sentenced the Peeping Tom to six months in jail but ordered that the sentence not be executed and he be deported straight away. Families living in villas in the neighbourhood of the accused suspected that someone was peeping into their bedrooms but were unable to catch him.
One day a resident found his dog barking madly at a villa in the neighbourhood. He called up the occupant of the villa on his landline but there was no response.
He raised an alarm and a lot of people from the area gathered. They called in the police. The accused was caught after a combing operation. He was questioned and the case was referred to court.
In another case, a man told court he had left his wallet in a laundry and when he got it back, QR1,700 in cash was missing.
The complainant said he went to the laundry to collect his clothes and as he had taken his wallet out of his pocket to pay, his mobile phone rang and he had to rush out in emergency.
“I forgot the wallet in the laundry. Later, when I went there enquiring, I was given the wallet back. Out of courtesy I did not check the wallet as that would have been impolite,” he said.
“However, back in my car I checked it and found that QR1,700 was missing, so I filed a police complaint,” the victim said.
