Had forgotten what a good sport orienteering is – athletics without the attitude. Brought Amalia, my 11-year-old niece, to the event in the Phoenix Park and she loved it. what she really liked was getting involved – she helped at the finish. That’s the thing with orienteering – everyone of all ages can get involved; indeed if they don’t the sport will collapse. Very cheering also to see the next generation active – little Mays, Dunnes, Longs, O’Connells, O Cleirighs, Brennans, to name but the ones I know.
At the finish, had a long converstion with Laoise Brennan, who told me everything about everyone, plus her own family history, leaning nonchalantly back on the tape for the finish with all the world-wearinness of a 40-year-old!
