Barry Minnock ran 2 hrs 17 mins 41 secs at the Hanover Marathon in Germany today – fastest white guy and a four minute PB!
A great run by the former GAA man, who started his athletics life as a mountain runner and is a member of Rathfarnham WSAF. He had entered the race as a warm-up for the Copenhagen Marathon, intending to drop out at 30km, ran through halfway in 67.30 and felt so good he kept going.
Winner was Joseph Kiptum (Ken) in 2:9.56. First woman was Natalya Puchkov (Rus) 2:30.16.
* Sensational run by Linda Byrne at Great Limerick Half Marathon; eighth overall in 74.56. Sergiu Ciobanu won the men’s race in 67. 58.
* Steven Colvert (Crusaders AC) won his 100m in 10.35 at the Occidental Invitational in Los Angeles, breaking the Irish U23 record held by Jason Smyth. Colvert also won his 200m in 20.77, two hundredths off his PB. At the same meet Paul Hession (Athenry) was 6th in his 100m in 10.64 and ran 21.44 for the 200m.
* Joanne Cuddihy (KCH) finished 2nd in the 400m in Golden Grand Prix in Kawasaki, Japan in 51.78, behind world champion Amantle Montsho of Botswana who ran 50.52. Cuddihy had nailed down her London 2012 place when she won the 400m at the Shizuoka International in 51.45 seconds a few days earlier. The London 2012 A standards is 51.55. Her time, run in wet conditions, improved on the 51.69 she had run in Australia last month.
* Claire Wilkinson won the women’s pole vault with 3.80m at the British Universities Championships in the Olympic Stadium, London. Loughborough student Justine Kinney, who competes in an Irish vest, won the very first official race held on the Olympic track – a heat of the 400m. Her time of 59.79 was a stadium record for exactly six minutes before it was broken in the next heat.
