Caitriona Jennings |
Caitriona Jennings, back with the Rathfarnham WSAF club after a period with Sportsworld, ran a superb personal best time of 2 hours 36 minutes 17 seconds at the Rotterdam Marathon.
That makes her the fourth Irish woman to achieve the Olympic A standard of 2 hrs 37 mins.
The 31-year-old Donegal native joins Maria McCambridge of Letterkenny who ran 2:36.37 in Rome last month, Linda Byrne of DSD with 2:36.23 in the Dublin Marathon last October and Ava Hutchinson, also DSD, who clocked a time of 2:35:33 at the Houston Marathon in January. As matters stand, the fastest three will be nominated for London 2012, although the final decision rests with AAI high permance director Kevin Ankrom.
Also in Rotterdam, Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu finished 13th of the men in n 2:15. 27 – an agonising 25 seconds off the men’s A standard. Sean Connolly of Tallaght was 22nd in 2:16.42, Gary Thornton of GCH 28th in 2:17.27, Tom Frazer of St Malachy’s 35th in 2:20.00, Breege Connolly of North Belfast Harriers 2:40.25, Gladys Ganiel, also NBH, 2:43.46, Lizzie Lee of Leevale 2:46.33 in her debut marathon.
Ethiopia’s Yemane Adhane ran 2:04.48 for victory; Tiki Galane, also Ethiopia, was first woman in a course record 2:18.58.

* Clonliffe’s Mark Kenneally and Linda Byrne of DSD won the Woodie’s DIY National 10km titles in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Winning the international Spar Great Ireland Run were Ethiopia’s Kenenise Bekele and Gemma Steel of Great Britain. The evergreen Catherina McKiernan finished in 35 mins 30 secs.
*Joanne Cuddihy won the 400m at the Australian Championships in 51.69 – just off the Olympic A qualifying time of 51.55. Younger sister Caitriona ran a personal best 55.03 for eighth place.
