Veteran power ruled at the ESB Beach 5km in Dublin’s Sandymount with Paul Cowhie beating BHAA chairman Paul O’Connell to win the men’s race, and Vanesssa Sallier getting the better of W50 Sheelagh Jones of the women.
A mile or so from Sandymount, a commercial race took place, but it was the clash with the annual Bob Heffernan 5km in Enfield that caused the most soul-searching. Many who ran in Enfield would have liked to run in Sandymount and vice versa. Whatever happened to the rule that stopped two races taking place on the same day in the same general area?
We’ve been here before. After the last running boom, when races were popping up everywhere, entries for the Dublin Marathon slumped from 11,000 to 3,000 in a couple of years. It could happen again.
