Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard switched the track for the country when he ran a perfectly judged race to win the men’s 6km race at the Woodie’s DIY National Novice Cross-Country Championships in the Curragh.
Racing on soft ground made even softer by the eleven races that had already taken place, Everard kept a watching brief when Kevin Seaward of Willowfield forced the pace in the opening laps.
Laura Behan won the women’s 3km having led from the early stages of the race. Catherine Devitt of Rathfarnham WSAF in second place was leading Dublin to county team victory. Martina Kiely of St Finbarr’s was third.
Large numbers turned out for all 12 races, with the atmosphere boosted by the news from Slovenia where Fionnuala Britton had become Ireland’s first European Cross-Country champion since Catherina McKiernan.
The overall total for the day was 1,530 athletes – 402 senior men and women and 1,127 juveniles.
