Four years after winning the National Intercounty title, Alan McCormack of Dundrum South Dublin showed a remarkable return to form when he won the Dublin Senior Cross-Country title in Santry today.
McCormack bided his time when Belfast athlete Stephen Scullion, wearing the Clonliffe shirt, made the early pace in tough, slippery conditions.
“I knew it would be a different race in the second half, that it would be a tough man’s course, and so it proved to be,” said McCormack after his victory. After his long absence from the sharp end of racing, McCormack, who is coached by Jerry Kiernan, is taking it day by day but hopes to turn out in the National Intercounties later this month in Ratoath.
Finishing a fighting second after a mid-race tumble was the defending champion John Coghlan of Metro St Brigid’s. Scullion held on for third, despite the best efforts of his Clonliffe team mate Sergiu Ciobanu, running just six days after a gruelling experience in the Dublin Marathon. John Travers from Donore and MSB’s Liam Tremble finished fifth and sixth; Travers is the latest athlete to join Jerry Kiernan training group. Clonliffe finished best of the teams ahead of Raheny.
In an exciting women’s race, Raheny pair Elish Kelly and Fiona Roche finished first and second, with Donore’s Barabra Cleary third. Niamh Devlin of DSD had bravely made the early running, but was caught on the second of four laps and faded to sixth place behind her clubmate Sarah Mullingan and Sonya O’Connell of Rathfarnham. Donore was first team.
Clonliffe’s Ian Guiden was a comfortable winner of the men’s junior race, while DSD’s Clare McCarthy, Sarah Fitzpatrick and Sarah Miles were the top three in the juniro women’s race.
Meanwhile at the Cork Senior Championships in Carrignavar, Leevale dominated with Mark Hanrahan winning the men’s race from his clubmate (and international triathlete) Bryan Keane, while Lizzie Lee beat Clare Gibbons-McCarthy of St Finbarr’s for the women’s titles. Winning the Limerick titles were Colm Turner of Limerick AC and Bilboa’s Rosemary Ryan, whiel in Ballyclare, Niall Robinson and Jessica were the senior winners at the McConnell Shield.
In the opening round of the Women’s Meet and Train Winter Series over a tough two-mile course in Dunboyne, Shona Keane of Sportsworld outsprinted her clubmate Caroline Conway for victory. Only six days earlier, Keane had finished 15th Irish woman in the Dublin Marathon with a time of 3 hrs 4 mins.
