Great run from Steven Colvert and Joanne Cuddihy in the 200m were just some of the highlights at the opening day of the National Track and Field Championships at sun-soaked Santry.
Colvert ran udner the Olympic A time in the heats but his time was wind-assisted aand so didn’t count.
Brian Maher surived the warm condiions to win the 10,000m, while Maria McCambridge took the women’s 5000m,  leading from the start, with only Siobhan O’Doherty attempting to stay with her.
In the women’s javelin, defending champion Anita Fitzgibbon crept ever closer to the 50m mark when she won with a best throw of 49.54 metre – a two-meter improvement on the 47 metres she threw last week in Eton. It puts Fitzgibbon third on the all-time Irish list.
* After an appeal to Athletics Ireland, Joanna Mills appeared to be back on the 4x400m squad for London 2012, replacing Caitriona Cuddihy. However, the Olympic Council of Ireland want further clarfication on the matter before they enter either athlete. Closing date for Olympic entries is Friday July 13.
