Pre-race favourite Fionnuala Britton won the women’s 6km with ease at the Great Edinburgh Cross-Country. England’s Gemma Steel third behind Britton at the European Championships a month ago, did her best to stay with Britton and ended up a fighting second.
Britton runs three cross-country races over the next month- Seville Cross-Country in Spain next Sunday January 15, the Antrim International on Saturday January 21 and then the Almons Blossom Cross in Portugal in February.
Joe Sweeney of Dundrum South Dublin, 5th in the Europeans, finished 11th in the men’s 9km, while Sean Tobin of Clonmel was 6th in the junior men’s race.
North Laoise’s Mary Mulhare finished a fighting fourth in the women’s U20 race; just one place behind was West Waterford race walker Kate Veale in her final cross-country race of the season. In the U-23 race, Laura Shaughnessy of Loughe was fourth with the team second, while in the U-17 race Ferrybank’s Aisling Quinn Ferrybank celebrated her 15th birthday in style by finishing second and leading Ireland to team victory.
