Suppose they gave an election and nobody came?
Would our imbecilic political class then starting listening to us?
Whatever happens at the next election one thing is certain. After all the votes are counted, 166 overpaid poltroons will park their privileged bums on the polished seats of Dail Eireann.
After that, all they need to do is work out how to file their expenses and fiddle the attendance records.
It is well past time for a voters’ charter – a declaration from the citizens of Ireland that we have had enough from the politicians we employ. We will not vote for any of them until they fulfil certain conditions.
These are:
1. That all politicians have their salaries capped at €70,000 – double what most of us earn.
2. That when they are made ministers, they either drive themselves or use public transport. No more shiny Audis and gardai drivers on full pay.
3. That their number be cut to no more than 100 – and that’s still too many.
4. That constituency “clinics” are banned and power restored to local councils to deal with local matters.
Our only power at the moment is to ignore the ghastly grotesques that make up the political class.
Let’s do it – at least until they agree to behave.
