The chasers – including Gerard Heery, Rob Cross and David Carrie |
Mark Hoey of Star of the Sea was the surprise winner of today’s National Lottery Dublin Half Marathon in the Phoenix Park.
In cold, occasionally blustery conditions, Hoey had run shoulder to shoulder with Rathfarnham’s Barry Minnock for the first five miles of the race after the the veteran Seamus Power of Kilmurry Ibrikane took an early lead. At seven miles, Power was forced to slow down when he got a bad stitch and Hoey moved into the lead, taking victory in 68 minutes 50 seconds. Finishing over half a minute behind was Sligo’s Martin Conway, with Pat Cassidy of Glasmough third and Minnock fourth and first over 35.
Power recovered later in the race and held on to finish sixth and first over 40 in 70 minutes 44 seconds. Former British Olympian James McIlroy from Larne finished a very respectable eighth place. A remarkable 11th and first over 45 was David Carrie, the inspiration behind “Team Carrie” – a large group of Louth and Meath athletes training for the Dublin marathon, among them Mark Hoey.
First of the women in a new personal best time of 76 minutes 27 seconds was Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane. Raheny veteran Annette Kealy was second with her clubmate Lorraine Manning third. The women’s results may have some anomalies; for example, a woman called Sorcha McCague from Monaghan is listed as coming second with a finish line time of 76:37 and a chip time 75:45. There is also a Kieron Peters listed as coming eighth or ninth; could be a Canadian? There were a lot of them about.
