Brilliant run by Caitriona Jennings |
Interesting splits for the Irish women at the Dublin Marathon:
Women: 5 miles – Ava Hutchinson 29.56, Maria McCambridge 30.09, Linda Byrne 30.31, Siobhan O’Doherty 30.23, Gladys Ganiel O’Neill 30.23, Caitriona Jennings 31.22, Pauline Curley 31.42.
Halfway – Ava Hutchinson 77.47, Linda Byrne 77.52, Maria McCambridge 78.05, Gladys Ganiel O’Neill 79.19 Siobhan O’Doherty 1:21.43, Pauline Curley 1:22.44
20 Miles – Linda Byrne 1:58.58, Maria McCambridge 1:59.45, Ava Hutchinson 2:01.46, Gladys Ganiel O’Neill 2:02.24, Caitriona Jennings 2:04.11, Pauline Curley 2:06.18, Siobhan O’Doherty 2:17.21.
Byrne’s pacemaking was almost perfect 3:46, 3:42, 3:41, 3:42 were her kilometre averages. Hampered by a calf muscle problem, Ava Hutchinson faded in the second half of the race, seeing her averages of 3:43 and 3:41 dip to 3:47 and 3:51. Maria McCambridge was just behind Hutchinson in the early stages and kept it smooth until the final quarter – her averages were 3:44, 3:42, 3:43 and 3:48. Gladys Ganiel O’Neill was also pretty consistent until the final few miles with averages of 3:47, 3:45, 3:48, 3.50.
Both Caitriona Jennings and Pauline Curley were spot on in their pacing – Caitriona’s averages were 3:53, 3:51, 3;51 and 3:51; Pauline’s were 3:57, 3:55, 3:55, 3:54.
Siobhan O’Doherty started fast but suffered later one – her averages were 3:46, 3:52, 4:16, 4:21.
In the men’s race, Sean Connolly, Sergiu Ciobanu and Alan O’Shea all went through five miles in 26.15. Close behind were Joe McAllister, Greg Roberts and Brian Maher on 26.43, while on 27.31 was Gary O’Hanlon.
At half way, the trio of Sean, Sergiu and Alan on 69 03-ish were still together; Joe McAllister and Greg Roberts were on 70.00.
Gary O’Hanlon – smart pacing |
By 20 miles, Sean was ahead at 1:46.09, followed by Alan 1:48.06, Joe 1:48.10, Brian 1:50.20, Sergiu 1:50.40, Gary 1:51.45 and Pauric McKinney 1:55.15. Now look at the full results – Sean stayed ahead, Sergiu passed Alan to come second, fourth was Joe, fifth Greg, sixth Gary and seventh Pauric.
Sean’s pacemaking was good – 3:15, 3:16, 3:17, 3: 17; just not fast enough. Sergiu took a dip from halfway to 20 miles, and then kept going while others faded – his averages were 3:15, 3:16m 3:26 and 3.20.
Alan started fast averaging 3:15 and 3:15 and then faded to 3:21 and 3:23 which is why he was caught. Joe McAlister started steadily enough at 3:19 pace but then lost speed with his pace slowing to 3:21 and 3:25. He still did well to hold out for fourth place. Gary’s pacemaking was almost perfect – 3:25, 3:27, 3:28, 3.28. Greg had a big mid-race dip – from 3:19 to halfway, he slumped to 3:38 but recovered for the final stretch to 3:32.
Pauric, the experienced old hand, started slow and then speeded up – 3:38, 3:35, 3:34, 3.33. By contrast Andrew Ledwith, in his first marathon, paid the price for too hot a pace at the start – from averages of 3:30 and 3:28, he slipped to 3:40 and then recovered slightly to 3:33.
* We hear that there were big problems with the timing system at the marathon (a 15 minute “outage”?); any errors here, please let me know.
* If you want to waste LOADS of time, go to the results section of the marathon site and click on the video bar . You’ll get film of 5 miles, half way and 100m from the finish. Magic!
