Sean Connolly from Tallaght warmed up for next week’s Rotterdam Marathon by running an impressive winning time of 24. 41 at the Good Friday 5-Mile Run in Killarney.
With Linda Byrne of DSD finishing fourth overall in 27.05, this has proved to be the quality race of the weekend – so far! * Tallaght’s Tom Fitzpatrick headed to Clare for his Easter break winning the Cratloe 10km by over three minutes in 31 mins 46 secs. * Local runners dominated the Carney Lissadell 10km in Sligo won by Emmett Dunleavy. * Ireland’s latest world title holder is Ciaran Doherty of Letterkenny AC, winner of a thrilling M35 3000m at the World Masters Indoors in Finland last Friday. Doherty crossed the line in 8:37:45 – just holding off the fast-finishing Fabrice Thiery from France.
After setting out fast, Doherty was never out of the top six. With a kilometre to go, he moved up a gear, passing a number of runners over the closing stages.
“I’m so happy that my training has paid off and that I got things right tactically. I really couldn’t be happier,” said Ciaran.
He is now a double world champion after winning the world outdoors steeplechase title in Sacramento, USA last summer. It’s been an eventful time for Ciaran – just last month he got engaged to Finn Valley’s Teresa McGloin.
World Masters Indoors: M35 3000m – 1 Ciaran Doherty (Ire) 8:37.45; 2 Fabrice Thiery (Fra) 8:38.00; 3 Fidel Ruiz (Spa) 8:41, 52.
