Picked up this souvenir platter at an antiques fair. It’s from the 1994 European Track and Field Championships in Helsinki, where Sonia O’Sullivan won the 3000m (I was there).
It’s made by Arabia, a well-known Finnish ceramics company and is No 409 in a limited edition of 500. Can’t make out the signature on the front – Poa Pavel??
I think they made them in a variety of styles – have found another on the internet showing a javelin thrower.
So how did this platter end up at an auction in Northern Ireland?
Anyone know anything about it?
PS: Thanks to Pierce O’Callaghan for digging this out from a Finnish friend:
“That’s me on the ceramic plate. The organizing committee gave some of them
as souvenirs, I guess. There are 5 of them altogether (javelin thrower,
high jumper, steeplechaser and long distance runner/race walker).
best regards
