Results Round-up Aug17-23 (ongoing)

* Ireland has picked up three gold medals at the European Masters in the Tri-nations area of Germany, Czech Republic and Poland. Geraldine Finnegan won the W45 heptathlon, John McDermott the M65 decathlon and Dorothy McLennan the W75 pole vault.
McDermott also finished second in the 300m hurdles, while Finnegan was 3rd 2000m steeplechase, 2nd 400m hurdles, 6th in both the 400m and triple jump and 8th in the javelin.
Other good results came from Ken Deevey 2nd M55 400m, John McMullin 3rd M65 5km track walk and 2nd 20km road walk and Evelyn McNeilis 3rd W65 10,000m. Just outside the medals were Patrick Forbes 4th M70 100m, Ernest Caffrey 4th M75 300m hurdles, and Sheila Champion 4th W75 javelin and 5th in the shot. Fifth in the W55 triple jump and 6th in the high jump was Lucy Moore Fox, who also threw 29.93m for 10th in the hammer. In the men’s 10,000m, Paul Cowhie was 8th M45  and Ian O’Leary 8th M40. Competition continues until the weekend.

*Clonliffe’s men and the Dundrum South Dublin women won the premier league titles at Sunday’s  Woodie’s DIY National Track and Field League finals in Tullamore.  In the men’s competition, Clonliffe beat Crusaders for a fifth consecutive title.
DSD had a mighty battle with Leevale, only winning by four points. Among the day’s winners for the Dublin club were Olympians Deirdre Ryan in the high jump and Claire Bergin in the 400m.

In the javelin, Anita Fitzgibbon appeared to have smashed the Irish record with a first round throw of 52.21m, but this was subsequently disallowed when her javelin was inspected and found to be three  millimetres short. Fitzgibbon has one more competition this season.
Brian Gregan was the star of the Clonliffe team, looking particularly impressive in the 4×400, where he stormed through the field from about fifth to second place, giving Clonliffe a wo-point overall victory.  
A delighted St Laurence O’Toole won the men’s first division, while St Abban’s took the women’s first division title.
