Cullen, Ledwith win at Jingle Bells; McCarthy1st in Glasgow

Snata Joe Nagle
Mary Cullen of North Sligo made a winning return to racing when she finished first woman in the 21st Jingle Bells 5km, held on a cold, bright winter’s day at Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
Cullen’s time of 16 minutes 26 seconds  saw her finish over half a minute ahead of Sli Cualann’s Deirdre Byrne, another  international athlete who hasn’t raced in some months.
Overall winner in 14 mins 24 secs was Andrew Ledwith of Fr Murphy’s,  clearly full recovered from his exploits in the National Lottery Dublin Marathon at the end of October. He finished comfortably clear of MSB’s John Coghlan, with Brian Maher of Kilkenny a close third.
First over 40 was MSB’s Shane Healy in  eighth place,  ahead of Ian O’Leary. Third master home was Liffey Valley’s Tom O’Connor who was first over 50.
Mary Cullen
Befitting a race that traditonally attracts families, marathon woman Sinead Jennings  finished first of several  athletes  pushing baby buggies – and in a respectable time of 20 mins 45 secs.
Behind came the usual selection of Santas, Rudolfs and other Christmas themed fancy dressers. Pride of place has to go to Joe Nagle, who had taken part in every Jingle Bells race since the first one was held in Docklands  back in 1991. Santa Joe stood at the start of the race ringing his bell before joining the second of the two “wave” starts.

Sarah McCarthy – Glasgow winner

WELL DONE SARAH! Sarah McCarthy, Maryfield, won the W18 title at the British and Irish Schools Combined Events Indoors in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.  The W18, W16 and M16 teams all took silver, with the M18 team 3rd.
