Fionnuala Wins in Antrim

Fionnuala Britton held off Britain’s Gemma Steel to win the women’s race at the Antrim IAAF International Cross Country today. 
Steel, third behind Britton at last month’s Europeans, bravely stayed with Britton over the opening two laps  before Britton pulled away for victory. Ethiopian Birtukan Adama was  third.
In a men’s race dominated by Kenyans, Mike Kigen won for a third consecutive year. 
Joe McAllister and Breege Connolly took the Northern Ireland titles.
* In Nenagh, David Hynes of Menapians ran 7.02 for 60m; Amy Foster clocked  7.52 in the first to the two women’s races. Leona Byrne of St Laurence O’Toole won the women’s combined events indoor title with a good score of 3396.
* US-based Tori Pena improved her Irish indoor pole vault record to 4.45m in Reno, Nevada on Saturday; just seven centimetres off the World Indoor qualification standard of 4.52cm. Pena has jumped 4.40m outdoors; her previous  indoor best of  4.21m  was set in Seattle a year ago.
