Results Round-Up March 10-11 (ongoing)

Ciara Mageean

Ciara Mageean of UCD made an impressive  return to racing when she won the women’s 5km at the Irish Universities Cross-Country Championships in Waterford.

On a testing 5km course, Mageean  and team mate Laura Shaughnessy controlled the pace until half way when Mageean moved to the front, opening a gap that  grew to approximately 300m by the finish. Una Britton of UL finished second, with  Ciara Everard, also UCD,  producing a fast final kilometre to finish third. It gave UCD an  emphatic team victory over DCU – a first for the college in 12 years.  Trinity finished third.


In the men’s 10km,  John Coghlan of DCU won the race beating DIT’s Daire Bermingham, with Michael Mulhare of UL outsprinting DCU’s Emmet Jennings and Jason Fahey of WIT for third. DCU maintained their team winning streak, with host college Waterford IT pushing them hard for second place and UCD third.

Kevin Dooney

At the Aviva All Ireland Schools Cross-Country in St Mary’s Galway,  Kevin Dooney of  CBC Monkstown won the senior boys’ title beating  Sean Tobin of High School Clonmel in a sprint for the line.  
Clar Nic Carthaigh of  Colaiste Iosagain, won the senior girl’s race, getting the better of Lorna Fitzpatrick (Sacred Heart, Newry) and Mary Mulhare (Scoil Criost Ri, Portlaise). Nic Carthaigh also led Colaiste Iosagain to the team title over Dublin rivals St Dominic’s Cabra – a third team victory on the day for the Stillorgan school. 
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner  of Colaiste Iosagain was a clear winner of the intermediate girls’ race from her  team mate Sarah Ni Mhaolmhuire  and Jessica Coyne of Crescent Limerick. This was Buttner’s fourth All Ireland Schools’ cross-country title in a row – a first in Irish schools athletics. Colaiste Iosagain  won the team title from Ballyclare High School.
Kyle Larkin  of Ard Scoil Ris Limerick was an impressve winner of the boys’ inter race from  Ryan Sharkey  of Methodist Belfast, with St Fintan’s Sutton best of the teams.  

Padraig Creavan of host school St Mary’s  Galway won the junior boys’ title, beating Cathal Doyle of Colaiste Choilm Swords.  Colaiste Mhuire Mullingar won the team title.  Clodagh O’Reilly of Loreto Cavan cruised to victory in the junior girls’ race, with  St Macdara’s beating Skerries for the team medals. 
Winners of the minor races were  Fergal Curtain of Midleton CBS and Siofra O’Flaherty  from St Leo’s Carlow.
* Caitriona Jennings of Sportsworld finished fourth overall at the Cara Bundoran 10-Mile Challenge, with Breege Connolly of North Belfast eighth. Overall winner was Letterkenny’s Patrick Brennan. 
* Irish cross-country champion Eddie McGinley of Annadale finished 18th in the McCain Intercounties Cross-Country held in Birmingham.  

* A good day in the Beagh/Shanaglish area on Sunday with the third running of their 10km road race, renamed the Martin Egan Memorial 10km. Winners Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy) and Michelle Lynch (GCH) were presented their trophies by Brian Bell, who ran with Martin Egan in his Irish four mile record-breaking run in Dundalk in 1946.
