Great day at Aviva All Ireland Schools in Tullamore where Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of Colaiste Iosagain won her 10th and 11th All Ireland Schools medals – and she still has two years to go!
Lorna Fitzpatrick oozed class when winning the senior 1500m from defending champion Amy O’Donoghue. Shane Fitzsimons from nearby Rochfortbridge won the race of the day – the senior boys’ 1500m.
Aaron O’Hanlon of St Mary’s Drogheda took the inter boys’ 1500m despite the best efforts of Cillian Kirwan from St Fintan’s, who is part of next Wednesday’s Olympic Torch Relay, and must be hapy to have knocked six seconds of his PB. Another thrilling race was the U-16 mile won by Eoin Strutt of St Fintan’s.
In the field, an absorbing inter boys high jump was won by Jamie Murtagh of Ashbourne CS on countback; second was David Cussen CSN Cork.
Sarah Lavin of Castletroy College won the Lar Byrne Athlete of the Meet trophy for her victory in the senior 100m hurdles, where her time of 13.73 was a championships best. In the senior 400m hurdles Nessa Cooper Millet of Kilkenny College equaled the existing record when she won in 60.63. Ben Kiely of Tramore CBS was one of the day’s double winners – he took both the senior 400 meters hurdles and the 400m flat.
Another double winner was sprinter Marcus Lawlor of CBS Carlow winner of both the senior 100m in a personal best 10.72 and the 200m. Taking the senior girls’ 100m title in 11.91 was Cliodhna Manning of Loreto Kilkenny.
Alice Akers of Scariff CC broke her sister Rachel’s record in the inter hammer with fine throw of 48.22m. Another record came in the inter pole vault where Emma Kelso of Belfast Royal Academy won in 2.91m.
Overall, Belvedere took the President’s Cup as best senior boy’s school for a 14th consecutive year and a 16th time altogether.
