Caitriona Jennings of Rathfarnham WSAF, who has qualified for the marathon at the London Olympics, ran an excellent personal best time of 75 minutes 29 seconds to finish fifth overall at Sunday’s Newry Half Marathon. Which meant she wasn’t defending her women’s mini marathon title, leaving an almost open field to the 2010 winner Linda Byrne of host club Dundrum South Dublin.

Byrne, wearing No 1, had built up a substantial lead by the half way mark at Nutley Lane and went on to finish in 33 mins 29 secs – exactly a minute faster than her 2010 winning time of 34 mins 29 secs when she was chased to the line by Maria McCambridge. A pack about 15 seconds behind included Fiona Roche of Raheny, Donore’s newest member Barbara Cleary and Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane, last year’s runner-up. Not far behind again were Breege Connolly of North Belfast Harriers, four times winner Catherina McKiernan and the 2010 winner Annette Kealy of Raheny.
In the chase for second place, O’Doherty came home first in 35.09 , just two seconds ahead of Cleary, followed closely by Roche. Connolly was fifth and McKiernan sixth and first over 40, with all six breaking 36 minutes. In seventh place was Annette Kealy, followed by Niamh Devlin of DSD, MSB’s Kate O’Neill and Fiona Clinton of DSD. If there was a team category, DSD, with three in the top ten, would surely have won it. Great, by the way, to see so many women wearing their club vests.
Winner of the visually impaired category for a second year in 52 mins 42 secs was Hilary Casey of the National Council for the Blind. A day earlier, Hilary, in her DSD colours, had won the Leinster W35 discus title in Tullamore and was second in the shot.
About 3,000 in total ran the race, which has moved a long way from its beginnings 30 years ago when a staggering total of 8,000 women ran. Back then, the mini marathon was a flagship event for women’s sport, inspiring women of all ages to get active and do something for themselves. There were many tears on the finish line of that first race in 1983 and similar events in the UK, Norway, Sweden, Germany and France followed its lead.

* Kenyan athlete Freddy Keron Sittok ran a new course record of 2 hrs 22 mins 12 secs to win this morning’s 6th Cork City Marathon. Sittok (or Kearon, or Kiron, or Sittuk) has been taking in a number of races on this island for the past couple of months. He was fifth in the Belfast Marathon and was notoriously misdirected while winning the Kildare Marathon. He won the Belfast City Airport 5km a fortnight ago, and last Wednesday,won the Furey Insurances Buncrana 5km running for Sparta.
Previous winner Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu in second place was also inside his own course record for Cork. Angela McCann defended her women’s title, finishing in 2:53.02. Gary O’Hanlon of Clonliffe and Leevale’s Lizzie Lee won the half marathon.

* Dave Donegan and Ian Rogers of Clonliffe finished first and second in the pole vault at today’s Northern Ireland Track and Field Championships in the Antrim Forum. Donegan with 4.90m took the title with Rogers second on 4.45m. Donegan is getting back to his best and may even improve his PB of 5.00m in the coming weeks.
