Anita Fitzgibbon |
* Anita Fitzgibbon of DSD set a new Irish javelin record of 52.97m at the Templmore International Throws Festival on Saturday, September 1. Unlike at the league final in Tullamore a fortnight ago, when Fitzgibbon threw 52.21 but her javelin was deemed to be 3mm short, this time there was no drama.
Other good results came from Conor McCullough of Crusaders, winner of the men’s hammer with a throw of 66.95m and discus with a best of 46.95, and from Galway’s Sean Breathnach winner of the shot with a 16.09m effort.
Tralee’s Clare Fitzgerald threw 13.41m to win the shot and 48.24m to take the discus.
* Scotland-based Sarah McCormack of Moorfoot continued her brilliant year on the hills when she finished 15th in the women’s race at the World Mountain Running Championships held on an uphill only 8.8km course in Italy. Earlier this year, McCormack, who runs in Clonliffe colours, finished 8th at the European Championships. In France, Eoin Keith finished 29th in a shortended Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc – an improvement on his 34th of last year.
* London 2012 triathlete Aileen Morrison finished second behind Julie Turley in the Laganside 10k, Belfast.
