* Only one Irish athlete has ever broken 2 hours 10 minutes for the marathon. That’s John Treacy who ran the Irish record of 2:09.15 at Boston in 1988.
* Best recent Irish time is the 2:13.55 run by Mark Kenneally of Clonliffe in October 2011.
* Eighteen Irish men have run under 2 hours 15 minutes
* In April 1988, John Woods ran the fastest time by an Irishman on Irish soil when he won the National Marathon in Wexford in 2:11.30. In second place in 2:12.19 was Dick Hooper.

* This year, three Irish athletes have broken 2 hrs 18 mins: Sean Connolly 2:16.42 (Rotterdam), Gary Thornton 2:17.29 (Rotterdam) and Barry Minnock 2:17.40 (Hanover). Fastest locally-based athlete was Sergiu Ciobanu with 2:15.27 (Rotterdam).
* Three Irish women have broken 2 hours 30 minutes for the marathon: Catherina McKiernan 2:22.23 in Amsterdam November 1998; Carey May 2:28.07 in Osaka January 1985 and Sonia O’Sullivan 2:29.02 in London 2005.
* Only six Irish women have broken 2 hours 35 minutes – add Regina Joyce, Marie Davenport and Monica Joyce to the trio above.
* Eleven women have run under 2 hours 36 mins; most recently Maria McCambridge 2:35.29 in Paris 2009 and Ava Hutchinson 2:35.33 in Houston 2012.
* Twenty Irish women have broken 2 hrs 40 mins for the marathon.
