Round-up: McCauley stars for Irish team at Schools International CE

The Irish team took two individual silver, as well as two team silvers and one team bronze at the annual SIAB Schools Combined Championships held in Athlone for the first time ever to celebrate the centenary of Irish schools athletics.

Star of the Irish team was Anna McCauley who scored personal bests in all five disciplines on the way to a silver in the over 16 girls competition.

With the high jump and 800m to go, McCauley, the Irish champion, was a close sixth place after recording personals best for the hurdles, long jump and shot. When she soared over 1.69m in the high jump, a medal was assured. Another personal best of 2:19.82 for second in the 800m saw her total score going up to a lifetime best of 3874 – exactly 301 points more than the 3573 she has scored when winning the Irish title..

It meant she finished second behind England’s Jade O’Dowda who finished on 3992 points. With Ruby Millet 7th, Rachel Kelly 9th and Vickie Cusack 10th, the Irish girls took team silver behind England.

In the over 16 competition,  a fine 800m run for Tony Odubote from Ennis saw him move from from third to second place while  England’s Toby Seal lost his lead to Joel McFarlane of Scotland. McFarlane was the only non-English winner on the day.

In the team rankings, Ireland finished third behind England and Scotland.  The Under 16 boys took team silver, with  Diarmuid O’Connor just missing out on individual bronze by two points  and all four team members inside the top ten.

England won all four team titles.
