New Women’s Record at Belfast Marathon (plus Monday results)

Nataliya Lehonkova from the Ukraine lowered the women’s record to 2 hrs 36 mins 50 secs at today’s Deep River Rock Belfast Marathon.  Overall winner of the race was Joel Kipsang from Kenya in 2:19.27. Tom Frazer was the best of the Northern Irish in 2:26.24, followed by the evergreen Tommy Hughes, now an M50, in 2:32.31 and Delfim Pimental , an M45, in 2:46.31.

Julie Balmer was first Northern Irish woman in an (agonising) 3 hrs 00 mins 29 secs; not far behind was Roisin Hughes in 3:01.10.

In the team relay, QUB Old Boys, Lagan Valley and North Belfast Harriers took the men’s, women’s and mixed titles respectively.

A total of 17,500 assembled for the marathon, marathon relay, walk, and fun run

* At the British Universities Championships in Bedford,  DSD’s Claire Tarplee won the 800m. Claire Wilkinson managed a height of 3.70 in the pole vault. Locally, at the St Abban’s Open Sports, Mieke Kiernan of Raheny  broke the 40m barrier for women’s hammer with a personal best 40.63m.

* Kevin English won the ARC 10km in the Phoenix Park.
